A Lenten Reflection on St Mary of Egypt

“Where shall I begin to weep for the actions of my wretched life?  What first-fruit shall I offer, O Christ, in this my lamentation?  But in thy compassion grant me forgiveness of sins.”  (The Canon of St. Andrew, Canticle 1, vs. 2.) During Great Lent we remember and venerate Saint Mary of Egypt both on April 1 and the Fifth Sunday of Lent. With the Canon of St. Andrew, read in many churches during the first and fifth weeks of Lent, we uphold her as an icon of repentance, an example for every Orthodox Christian to emulate. Yet for many years, she lived a life of bondage to...

Blessings Beyond Bars

Blessings Beyond Bars is a Lenten Youth Project with the Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry (OCPM) to teach children and young adults about prison ministry. OCPM provides a lesson plan and do-it-yourself craft activity to involve youth with a hands-on project using shoeboxes as mock-prison cells. We offer fundraising ideas to collect donations in the boxes to help OCPM fill prisons with Bibles, prayer books, icons and Orthodox books. This project can be done with your parish, Sunday School, youth group, family or friends during Lent!

The Road to Redemption

At 28, Helen Sharkey landed her dream job as an accountant at a prominent company in Houston. She never imagined that the dream would become a nightmare, ultimately resulting in a felony plea and a sentence in a maximum security prison. The company was Dynegy Corporation, an energy trading firm and Enron rival. Sharkey was assigned to work on Project Alpha, a now-infamous deal in which Dynegy recorded $300 million in loans as income. Sharkey was the youngest and most junior member of the team. OCPM Offers Helping Hand to Local Families

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, the staff at our OCPM headquarters wondered, “What can we do to help someone in need?” We called the local jail, and they put us in touch with a nonprofit that donates Thanksgiving meals to families with a loved one in jail. We signed up to help deliver the food, and went to pick up boxes of turkeys, canned goods, and fresh produce. Each box had enough food for several meals. We met some wonderful families along the way. At one house, a young boy smiled at us as we approached. “Is that box heavy?” he asked. “Yes!” we answered. And then he...
